Bananas may seem simple — but thanks to TATABA, they’re becoming a powerful force for change in Taita Taveta.
The TATABA Mission
At its heart, TATABA’s mission is unity and empowerment. Founded in 2018, the cooperative brings together local banana farmers to build strength through collective action. We don’t just stop at growing, we aggregate produce, ripen fruit, even explore banana-based by-products.
Core Projects That Shine
-
Aggregation & Marketing: Farmers pool their bananas, sort them, and prepare for the market.
-
Value Addition: Think banana chips, puree, or other by-products, not just selling fresh fruit.
-
Rapid Multiplication: W’re using smart farming tech to multiply healthy banana plants, boosting yields and sustainability.
Governance & Community
TATABA isn’t run by a faceless board. We have real people, like Ndelejai Msangi (Chairperson) and Rosinna Mruttu (Vice Chairperson). There’s also a Youth Council, giving young farmers a seat at the table.
Why It’s a Big Deal
-
Stronger Bargaining Power: Small farmers working together can negotiate better prices.
-
Innovation for Small Farms: Rather than relying on old methods, TATABA is investing in rapid multiplication and technology.
-
Local to Global Potential: With aggregation and quality control, our bananas could supply more than just local markets.
-
Sustainable Impact: Value-addition means more income, less waste, and a more resilient farming community.
Real-Life Impact
Imagine a farmer in Taveta: instead of selling a few bananas at low price, they join TATABA. Their bananas are graded, pooled, and sold in bulk. They can also contribute to by-product lines — more income, less waste. And with youth involvement, the next generation is already being trained to take over.
