On November 1st 2025, the Tataba Youth Council held a productive meeting at the Sub County Hall, bringing together 18 passionate young members determined to drive positive change in Taita Taveta.
✅ Confirming Progress and Setting Direction
The meeting started by confirming the previous minutes, which were read by the Secretary and approved by members. Key updates followed — the Treasurer proudly reported that the Youth Council has been officially registered, with a certificate ready for collection. The registration process cost Kshs. 5,000, leaving a balance of Kshs. 2,445 in the account.
However, Chairperson Msangi clarified that the registration should have been done under the Tataba Cooperative, since the Youth Council operates as part of the main organization and not independently. Members agreed that any fees already paid will be converted into shares within the cooperative.
To ensure consistency, members also agreed to adopt the Tataba Constitution, with plans to add specific clauses for the Youth Council’s operations.
Exciting Youth-Led Projects Take Shape
The energy in the room grew as members discussed upcoming projects aimed at promoting sustainability and innovation in agriculture:
1. Coconut Tree Nursery
The team agreed to start a coconut nursery at the Kitobo Demo Farm. Both East African Tall and Dwarf varieties were chosen for propagation. James Rayan and Moris Muema were assigned to draft the budget and identify sources for high-quality seedlings.
2. Organic Farming Initiative
Members Papa Kadeghe and Moris Muema volunteered to visit Lesuyai Farmers to explore leasing land for organic farming. This project aims to empower young people through eco-friendly agricultural practices.
3. Banana-Based Chicken Feeds Project
One of the most promising discussions centered around a research presentation by Eric Ndambuki on how to produce chicken feed from banana stems, leaves, and peels. Members were impressed by the innovation and agreed to conduct a hands-on demonstration on Sunday, November 9th, 2025, at Eric’s farm.
The group decided to prioritize these three projects as the foundation for youth-led development and sustainability under Tataba.
New Leadership Elected
Elections for the Youth Advisory Council were also held. The new leaders will serve as the driving force behind the council’s goals. The elected team includes:
-
Chairperson: Eric Ndambuki
-
Vice Chairperson: Amina Patience
-
Secretary: Moris Muema
-
Vice Secretary: Nancy Mugen
It was also agreed that the Treasurer of the main Tataba Board of Management will serve as Treasurer for the Youth Council as well — ensuring alignment between both teams.
Wrapping Up
The meeting concluded at 12:00 p.m. with a prayer led by Paul Ngotendei. Members left motivated, united under the slogan:
“Promoting Sustainable Banana Production and Marketing in Taita Taveta County.”
Takeaway
The Tataba Youth Council is not just talking about change — they’re making it happen. Through teamwork, innovation, and practical projects, these young leaders are proving that the future of sustainable agriculture in Taita Taveta is bright and in capable hands.
